Storage Guidelines – Best Ways to Maintain LiFePO4 Battery Performance

Ideal storage temperature and location

Like most batteries, LiFePO4 batteries perform best when stored in a cool, dry place. Proper storage is important to maintain the performance of your LiFePO4 battery over time. The ideal storage temperature range is between 20-30°C (68-86°F). Temperatures above 30°C can cause the battery to self-discharge more quickly, while temperatures below freezing may cause damage. Be sure to store your battery in a clean, dry location away from direct sunlight, which can accelerate chemical reactions inside the battery.

Seasonal storage

Short term storage (Under 3 months)

Charge the battery to 50% capacity before storing. This helps maintain the cells inside. No need to recharge during storage.

Long term storage (Over 3 months)

Fully charge the battery to 40-50% every 3 months to keep it in good working condition when taking it out of storage.

Summer storage

High heat speeds up reactions and can damage battery. Ensure battery is charged fully and stored in a cool, dry place indoors during summer months.

Winter storage

Low temperatures are okay for storage as they slow reactions inside. But avoid very freezing conditions below -10°C/14°F to prevent cracking battery components.

What else you need to do during storage
  • Always disconnect the battery from any device to avoid slow self-discharge.
  • Avoid storing in extremely hot or cold areas like attics, basements, or garages.
  • Do not expose the battery to moisture or liquids.
  • Check the battery terminals periodically and tighten if loose.
  • Recharge the battery every 6 months, even if not in use, to keep it in working condition.
  • Check voltage every 3 months if storing long term to ensure it’s holding a charge.
  • Immediately contact the manufacturer if noticing physical damage, cracks or fluid leaks in the battery during storage.
  • Properly dispose of or recycle battery once it reaches end of useful life.

By following some simple storage guidelines tailored for LiFePO4 batteries, you can effectively extend the performance and life of your LiFePO4 batteries during both short- and long-term storage, maximizing their performance.
